Just finished rewatching this, and I've got a couple of things to jot down.

I think this episode does a pretty good job of setting up the core elements of the characters.

Lana - Fairy Princess. Stuck in a fantasy, not really living in the real world. She's always looking for something 'other' than what she has now. She holds onto the past while dreaming of a perfect future that can't really exist. It also says something that Clark had to be in a morbid and dark place in order to make a connection with her; the graveyard, where she's holding actual conversations with her dead parents as if they were alive.

Martha - The Mother. Establishes that she prefers the simple and uncomplicated. It also shows that she's always wanted to be a mother, and accepts Clark even though she knows right off the bat that he's neither simple or uncomplicated.

Jonathan - Reluctant to accept unusual at first. Quick to judge, yet a loving family man.

Lex - Afraid of the truth, yet driven to know it, to open his eyes and see, to be unafraid and a leader. He's also very quick to cling and desperate for a connection.

Clark - Wanting more than anything to be normal, he's far from perfect, underestimated, seems himself as an outsider. However, his first instinct is to help/save.

Chloe - Eager for, and unafraid of, the truth. Unwilling to be put off by others not believing what she's found. Hints right away about a crush on Clark.

Pete - Trying to hard to be the big man on campus. Hints right away about a crush on Chloe.

Romantus Interuptus - Right when it looks like Chloe could be in a potentially romantic situation, Clark pops into the scene.

It's interesting to note that the guys who strung up Jeremy ended up dead, while Whitney, who strung up Clark will end up dead. Though, he'll die a hero.

Music:
The Way it Is - Bruce Hornsby
Long Way Around - Eagle-Eye Cherry
Eight Half Letters - Stereoblis
Wonder - Embrace
Unstopable - The Calling
Inside the Memories - Fear the Clown
Let's Go - Capitol Eye
Maybe - Stereophonics
Everything I Own - Jude
Everything - Lifehouse
